Got this idea from Nichole Heady... So cute! Had to make it Cricut style, of course!
First of all... I am always making files that have "score lines - DO NOT CUT!!" tabs. Do you have one of the embossing blades from Cricut yet? Well, when you get one, this is how you can always have it handy.... I have taped mine on the only panel inside my machine where it's out of the way but still accessible: right behind the cartridge. Also, I put my machine on Blade: 3, Pressure Medium for scoring cardstock. I've found that if I put the blade depth too deep it can chew up the paper.

The pic below isn't great. Sorry.
But wanted to show you what it looks like after you've scored and cut your file. I usually "cut" the score tab first then without touching anything on the machine, I move over to the cut tab and cut those shapes. Then I unload the mat from the machine.

Fold along all of your score lines and put your birdhouse together... Easy-Peeezie Lemon Squeezie! I embossed using the Cuttlebug folders too.. swirly bird pattern on the bottom, Swiss dot on the bottom.
Fold the roof piece in half. (sorry no score tab provided for that) I glued one side down first then easily flipped house and glued down other side. **DON'T do what I did and forget to add your loop before gluing roof in place. that little hole in the bottom of the birdhouse isn't quite big enough to get your hand inside **

I took the bottom tabs and folded them in and alternated each corner of each tab over-under all the way around so it held itself down. Now, you should be able to easily add a bit of glue along tabs and press it onto the base piece. I also used my finger through the hole in the side of the birdhouse to press tabs onto base.

Braided some string and knotted it around a big brad and pushed it through the hole in the top so it can be hung. Birdhouse is all finished. Sweeeeet! I may go back and add some details to the front later but even with out it I think it turned out cute!

And here is a version that my friend Lacy did... So pretty!!! Thanks for sharing Lacy!

Several people that don't have Mini Monograms are now not left out of making birdhouses. I recreated the roof and base using only George. Please specify which file you need.

About the embossing blade: Obviously I'm the only person on the planet besides Stephanie from the message board that knows about Scrapbookdiecutter.com. They have a picture of it on their website. It's $30!!! {OUCH!} If you look at the back end of a cricut blade it looks identical to the tip of the embossing blade. WHY should I pay $30 for something I already own? I flip a dull cutting blade upside down inside the blade housing. I use blade depth of 3 with pressure of medium or High or blade depth of 4 and pressure of low or medium. If you go much higher than that your paper might get torn or scratched instead of scored (there is a bit of a point on the end).

Jen, When I grow up I want to be just like you!!! You are so amazing! How do you create designs so quick when someone ask? Thanks for all you do and share with us. I have been waiting for your blog too. Thanks.
ReplyDeletegreat work am new to ciccut and blogging so bear with with me but you are so neat to figure this out and share with all of us goofy ones thanks so much
ReplyDeleteThis is soooo pretty! When you use the cricut to emboss...does it wreck the cutting mat?? I didn't realize that cricut made an embossing tool for the machine! Awesome! I'm gonna have to find one of those! TFS
ReplyDeleteI read about you on the Cricut Chirp and am having so much fun looking at all of your creations. Beautiful work!! I read about the embossing blade the way you did it. I have a question did you use a regular blade but turned it upside down? So the rounded end is what you used to make the score lines? $30.00 is a bit much for me for 1 blade but I would love to be able to emboss and score with my Cricut.
ReplyDeleteKathleen
I am so excited that shared your birdhouse and blog address on the Cricut newsletter. I had seen Nicole's and thought it was adorable, but had no clue how it's made. With what you have shared on your blog, I feel like I could decorate my entire 2008 Christmas tree with these adorable birdhouses.

Brilliant!!!! Yes, you are. I never, ever would have thought to turn a blade over and use the other end so that I could score/emboss. Thank you so very much for sharing that wonderful little tidbit.
ReplyDeletefabulous item. Makes a wonderful tissue box for any room in the house, but the pink girly one for a little girl's bedroom is fabulous. Carefully unpack a square box of tissues and put contents in birdhouse with one bit sticking out the hole.
ReplyDeleteCould also velcro the base on so house can be lifted off to refill or to open if used to store other things. upside down blade great as scorer. Had all my old ones as kept in case could find use for. now i have thanks.
